Sean, That is an interesting idea but for my property I can say I have never had a kayak fall off of the arms. However, if you are in an area that gets high winds you may have to adjust the design to prevent wind from blowing them off.

Hi! Thank you for posting this plan. I have the same challenges at my property and this is a great suggestion. I am wondering if you considered putting the arms that how the kayak at an angle of less than 90 so that there would be less chance of the kayak walking off the rack? It seems like it might work but as a guy who has carried it out a really value your opinion. Thank you!!!

That's great to hear John, glad you like the build! If building on a slop just be to sure to have your bottom arms high enough so the kayaks are not too close to the ground. Good luck and take care!

In reply to <a href="https://www.buytoolbags.com/diy-building-a-wood-kayak-rack-for-outdoor-storage/#comment-4223">DAVID MURPHY</a>.

David, I think it would work if you ran 2x4's across the bottom to create a "free standing kayak rack" but you may need a couples braces (2x4 angled) going from the bottom 2x4 up to the 4x4 post. The angled braces would add support to the vertical 4x4 post as there will be alot of leverage working against your bottom attachment points. Once you get started you might have to change things but it sounds like you have a good plan. One other tip I would offer is to make the spacing between the bottom arm and the upper arm wider so you can load the boats right side up on the bottom rack and then flip them over. On my design the boats must be loaded upside down and unloaded upside down as there is not enough clearance between the arms to completely flip a kayak. Thanks for stopping by and good luck with the project.

The design is simple and straight forward. Since mine will be on a cove with extremely wet soil, I will not be anchoring the 4 X 4 s in the ground. However I plan to add a horizontal 2 X 4 on each side at the outside bottom of the vertical 4 X 4 s as a brace to prevent tipping. Do you think this would be sufficient? Thanks
